PISCATAQUIS COUNTY & DEXTER: In an effort to keep their communities safer, Piscataquis County and Dexter have embraced technology, by implementing several digital methods that make it easy, efficient, and anonymous to submit tips to local police departments.

TipSubmit Mobile is an anonymous and secure tool that allows users to submit tips to local law enforcement agencies. Users must first download the free application on their iPhone or Android phone and create a password in order to submit a tip. Through the same program, tips can also be submitted online, by phone, or by text, with the same promise of personal security and anonymity. The tips are sent directly to police dispatchers within the jurisdiction of the reported crime.

The use of the app is part of a collaboration between the Piscataquis County Sherriff’s Department, police departments in Dover-Foxcroft, Greenville, Brownville, Milo, and Dexter, and efforts by the Piscataquis Public Health Council, Healthy Maine Partnership, and Public Engine. Signs that speak directly to criminals

Variable message sign fights crime and increases safety in East Sussex.

Portable LED displays have long been used to manage traffic and relay real-time information to road users, but they are now being used to deter criminals and promote special safety initiatives among other things.

Civic leaders in East Sussex have been taking part in a collaborative effort designed to improve safety using portable variable message signs.

The Community Safety Partnership for the Rother area pooled their resources to invest in a portable unit from supplier Mobile Traffic Solutions (MTS).

The body, which includes representatives from the police, fire service, district and county councils, the probation service and the local Clinical Commissioning Group, has since been sharing it in various locations around the region.

Not only is the sign deployed to manage traffic, it’s used to display key safety information, to appeal for witnesses to incidents or accidents and keep residents and visitors up to date with events in the area.

The success of the scheme is being measured by the public’s feedback, some positive results have been highlighted.

Police reported a dramatic reduction in the number of burglaries at a crime hotspot in the county after putting a message on the sign telling of extra patrols in the area.

Follow-up initiatives have prompted comparable results and there was a similarly positive effect when the sign was used as part of an anti-speeding campaign.
